Marine Turtle Tour Guides can play a critical role in reducing disturbance of nesting turtles by supervising and interpreting visitor-turtle interactions. Qualified Guides also support and maintain a sustainable wildlife tourism industry and contribute economically to the region by providing a high quality tourist attraction.
The Turtle Tour Guiding Course provides students with the knowledge and practical expertise required to work as an interactive Marine Turtle Tour Guide in Western Australia. In addition to this course, Guides are legally required to obtain the appropriate licenses from the Department of Environment and Conservation, or work for an organisation that already holds these licenses.
The course is nationally accredited and incorporates four of the core units required for a Certificate III in Tourism (Guiding). It can therefore be used as a stand-alone training package for Turtle Tour Guides, or as a component of a Certificate III in Tourism. The Turtle Tour Guiding Course is comprised of two modules. Module 1 focuses on training students to lead supervised beach-based turtle interactions and must be completed during the turtle nesting season. Module 2 concentrates on the development and delivery of interactive, beach-based marine turtle tours and can be undertaken at any time during the year.
